Library Workshops

The library offers a variety of different library workshops. These include integrated, embedded and sign up workshops which aim to develop the information literacy skills of our students. The IL and Research Team  strive to make all our workshops interactive and skills based.

Integrated workshops are provided as part of a timetabled module to any group of students in the college. The lecturer of the module can ask the Digital Literacy Librarian to deliver from the predetermined suite of topics listed below:

  • Finding Sources For Assignments
  • Referencing Techniques, Tools, and Tips
  • Assignment Planning in Six Steps
  • Critical Thinking for Research
  • Preparing a Literature Review
  • Using AI and Avoid the Pitfalls
  • Presentation Skills for Students
  • Preparing for Your Exams

To book a workshop, please complete the form linked here. These workshops are delivered online or onsite.

Embedded workshops are partnerships between by module lecturer and the Digital Literacy Librarian.  These workshops involve librarians, faculty, and other institutional partners redesigning  instruction sessions, assignments and courses. They are a part of a timetabled module.  Students who take these classes can be assessed on the information literacy competences with the results feeding into the module mark.  This type of workshop generally results in better learning outcomes for students. These workshops are delivered online or onsite.

Sign up workshops can be booked by students. They run between 4-5pm Monday to Thursday. These workshops run in a cycle dependant on the current needs and schedule of DBS as a whole. These classes are delivered online and can be booked here.

Tips for Faculty: Delivering a Successful Library Skills Workshop

Reach out early: The Digital Literacy Librarian is very busy during each semester so reaching out to them early can ensure you get a class delivered on the date you require. Two weeks advanced notice is standard.

Share information: It is beneficial to share your syllabus, assignment instructions for relevant project, links to online classes and the location of an in-person class with the Digital Library Librarian before the class.
Prepare lesson plans: When planning research lessons, it`s crucial to identify the specific area where students need the most guidance. By focusing on one aspect of the research process per class, you can ensure better learning outcomes.
Explain the Library: Before the library visit, give students assignments that connect to your Library. This helps them understand the purpose and prepare for a focused session.
Support: Faculty attendance at library classes is compulsory and reinforcing the importance of lesson during the lesson can go along to ensure students are engaged (Charlestown EDU, 2024)
