Turnitin

How to use Turnitin

Step 1:

Log into Moodle, find the assignment submission page for your module where you will submit to Turnitin. Please ensure that you accept the new Turnitin EULA.

Step 2:

Upload your assignment. After you have uploaded your assignment, a Similarity Report displaying a percentage will be made viewable. Click on the percentage shown in the submission box.

Step 3:

When you have clicked on the the percentage, you will receive a Similarity Report on Turnitin. This report will highlight any similarities found in your assignment. Note: It usually takes 24 hours for Turnitin to generate a report, however at busy times this can take more than that. Allow plenty of time before the assignment deadline in order to receive the similarity report back and make any changes needed.

Step 4:

Review the report to fix referencing issues and/or instances of plagiarism. Please read The Turnitin report tab for guidance.

Step 5:

If you alter the assignment, you can submit to to Turnitin again for a new Similarity Report.

Step 6:

Make your final submission before the due date has passed. You will receive an email notification confirming your submission.

Using other online reference checkers

We strongly advise students NOT to use free, online reference checkers which are not associated with DBS or Turnitin. Students may feel it will benefit them to use these online reference checkers but these tools are usually inadequate in checking reference as they do not have as much access to different publications as Turnitin to accurately compare them. Additionally, these online reference checkers are not trustworthy as they have been shown to take students' work, sell students' work to other students, and as a result get students in trouble for plagiarism.
