Presentation Skills

What are presentation skills?

This guide is designed to help you present on your topic in an informative, effective and academic way.

It details why you may be given a presentation as an assignment and lays out the follow steps:

  • Preparing your Presentation
  • Practicing your Presentation
  • Performing your Presentation
  • Answering Questions after your Presentation

As well as tips and tricks to make you more comfortable with engaging with this kind of work.

Presentations as assignments

A presentation should be treated like any other kind of assignment. It is as important and equal to an essay; the same types of skills you would apply to another piece of academic work -like your research skills and your referencing skills- should be used as you prepare a presentation.

When you are asked for a presentation, you are being assessed on your communication and time management abilities on top of the standards metrics a lecturer would mark your work on.

Presenting is also a beneficial, transferable skill. It is something you will use during job interviews and in the workplace. A presentation as an assignment allows you to practice and perfect these essential skills.
