Learning tools

Throughout your academic journey, you will make use of several tools that help you learn. These can help you manage references, aid with assignments, and access resources

Some of these tools are provided by DBS, such as Moodle and Microsoft 365, while other tools are recommended by the library, such as Zotero.

Criteria to assess learning tools

Keep in mind however, that all learning tools must be evaluated! Use this list of criteria to assess the credibility of a learning tool and judge if it is appropriate to use:

When was the tool created, has it been revised or updated, does it reflect current knowledge, do the links work?
What and who is the tool designed for, is it appropriate for academic use, how does it compare to other tools that do the same thing?
Who created the tool, do they have any qualifications that are relevant to the stated purpose of the tool, is there contact information if you need help?
Does the tool actually do what it is stated to do, can the efficiency of the tool be verified?
Why does the tool exist, is the creator trying to inform, persuade, entertain or sell you something, are their intentions clear?

Generative AI

Your work is a demonstration of your own learning and understanding, and any impropriety invalidates the grade, and can result in fails, required repeats, delayed progression or completion, and potentially harsh penalties depending on the nature of the case.
The usage of artificial intelligence software and tools, such as ChatGPT are not prohibited but students should be aware of the following guidelines regarding its use:

  • You alone are responsible for the work you produce. Take into consideration the long-standing and damaging impact deception can have on your personal and professional reputation.
  • Use AI tools as partners in achieving goals rather than replacements for work.
  • Use high-quality sources in your assessments and be wary of substandard sources, misinformation and disinformation.
  • Double-check resources cited by AI tools.
  • Develop an appetite for reading widely and consulting multiple sources to improve their critical and creative thinking.
