National funding agencies

Below is a representative list of national funding agencies that offer funding opportunities for academic researchers.

Enterprise Ireland

Enterprise Ireland is the government agency responsible for the development and promotion of the indigenous business sector. Funding is available for industry oriented research and the subsequent commercialisation of research. Enterprise Ireland also offers a range of supports and funding to companies that wish to engage in R&D.

Environmental Protection Agency (ETA)

Effective management of the environment is increasingly science-driven. Through its research and development programme, the Environmental Protection Agency is generating the knowledge and expertise needed to protect and manage Ireland's environment.

Irish Research Council (IRC)

The Irish Research Council manages a suite of inter-linked research schemes, funding scholars at various career stages, from postgraduate study to senior research project-based awards. For early stage researchers, schemes include the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme, the Enterprise Partnership Scheme (postgraduate and postdoctoral), the Employment Based Programme, and the Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme. The Research Project Grants Scheme allows researchers and research teams to expand their activities into new research areas by way of stimulus project grants and knowledge transfer initiatives.

Science Foundation Ireland 

SFI provides grants for researchers from around the world who wish to relocate to Ireland and those already based in Ireland, for outstanding investigators, for conferences and symposia, and for collaboration with industry. The majority of SFI awards are in the fields of science and engineering underpinning three Government-prioritised industrial sectors: biotechnology (Bio), information and communications technology (ICT) and sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) aims to play a leading role in transforming Ireland into a society based on sustainable energy structures, technologies and practices. One of their key objectives is to support evidence-based responses that engage all actors, supporting innovation and enterprise for a low-carbon future. SEAI operates a number of programmes that provide financial supports to demonstrate superior energy technologies or provide essential support in specifically identified sectors.

Teagasc is the Irish institute responsible for research in agricultural production, the environment and the rural economy. Their research remit includes the dairy, beef, sheep, cereals, pig sectors as well as alternative enterprises such as forestry and bioenergy.

Department of Agriculture Food & The Marine

DAFM plays an important role in this vision for the Agri-Food sector, via the publicly funded agri-food research programmes that are in place. The three primary public good research programmes run by DAFM are the Food Institutional Research Measure (FIRM), and the Research Stimulus Fund (RSF) and the programme of Competitive Forestry Research for Development (COFORD).

Fulbright Programme

The Fulbright Awards provide grants for Irish citizens and E.U. citizens who have been resident in Ireland for three or more years to research, study, or lecture in the United States on annual basis

The Heritage Council is a public body working in the public interest; our priorities are to support jobs, education and heritage tourism in local communities. The Heritage Council complements but importantly builds on the work of other state heritage bodies which have primary responsibility for the care of property in state ownership and the designation of protected areas.

The Marine Institute is mandated to "undertake, to coordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development" in accordance with the Marine Institute Act, 1991.  Accordingly, the Institute acts as the implementing body, on behalf of its parent department (Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine), for dedicated marine research funding.

Top tip for dealing with national funding agencies

Some national funding agencies require researchers to making publications via an open access repository. Researchers can deposit material in DBS eSource to ensure compliance with the majority of funders’ mandates. Where additional deposits are required, the library will provide assistance.
