How to: Reference

Introduction

Referencing is a fundamental skill for all students, and there are a number of tools that the library can provide to help you with this skill.

Reference Generators

A reference generator will create a one-time reference list or citation for you. With these, you can access a list of different referencing styles that each have the reference list entry for the document that you are currently looking at in the database.

Please note that although these tools provide great assistance, you must double-check that they have included all the information you need for a correct reference and some minor editing may be required.

Reference Managers

A reference manager is a software program that will help you to keep track of your sources and will create a reference list for you in a variety of styles. They are helpful for keeping your references and sources organised, especially when working on multiple assignments or a large research project or paper.

Here at DBS we recommend that you use Zotero for reference management.

Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organise, cite, and share your research sources. It lives right where you do your work - in the web browser itself.

Download Zotero

The library runs workshops on understanding Zotero and learning its basic functions at the start and end of the term.
